Ted’s 2nd Birthday fundraiser ✨
Beautiful family and friends,
Each year in honour of our first born Edward I plan to fundraise for a charity that supports those impacted by stillbirth. With Ted’s 2nd birthday coming up on the 1st, I (and consequently Henry) am taking part in Red Nose’s 3km a day in August challenge.
Whilst many associate Red Nose with SIDS you may not know that they also support crucial research about stillbirth and provide bereavement support for anyone affected by the death of a baby or child.
The Red Nose annual report for 2023 (the year Ted was born) states that across the year in Australia, 2709 babies under one year old died - 1751 of those babies were stillborn. Additionally, 50% of stillbirths that occur in the last weeks of an otherwise healthy pregnancy have no known cause.
When Teddy unexpectedly and suddenly died, Toby and I were flooded with devastating, time sensitive and complex decisions no parent should have to make, yet here we were, some within minutes of receiving the news:
“We need to discuss how you will deliver him and the implications it may have on future pregnancies” - I can’t tell you how far a future pregnancy was from our minds.
“We need to think about whether you would like an autopsy performed, it might give us answers that will help in the future” - It felt cruel and useless that any answers wouldn’t help Ted.
“You will need to appoint a funeral director who will collect him from the hospital” - leaving the hospital without him felt incomprehensible.
“I don’t want any of this” - I desperately responded to them all.
I was fortunate that our incredible team at The SAN was equipped to gently guide us through these soul-crushing decisions, but on this journey I have quickly learned not all bereaved parents are afforded the same knowledge and care. The resources that Red Nose provides to hospitals and parents have life-altering impacts. Guidelines and support that I sincerely hope you will never need and crucial research to bring avoidable stillbirth numbers to 0.
