Getting Silly for a Serious Cause: Why I’m Wearing My Red Nose

Every year, the last Thursday of August rolls around and my social media feed fills up with red noses, silly socks, and the occasional bright wig. This year it’s Thursday 27 August, and once again, I’ll be joining in — this time as part of Hot Mums for Sunny & Rex.
A bunch of us mums here in Port Macquarie are rallying together this Red Nose Day, walking, wearing our noses, and raising funds in honour of two precious babies, Sunny and Rex. Their memory is what’s driving our team this year, and it’s a reminder of exactly why this cause matters so much to so many families.

If you’re not familiar with it, Red Nose Day is Australia’s biggest fundraiser for Red Nose — the charity that’s spent decades working to prevent the sudden and unexpected deaths of babies and young children, from SIDS to stillbirth, while supporting families who’ve lived through that unimaginable loss. It started back in 1988, and what began as a simple idea — get silly, raise money, save little lives — has grown into something that’s touched thousands of Australian families.

Why It Matters to Me
You don’t need a personal connection to a cause for it to matter, but when you do have one, it tends to stick with you. Whether it’s a friend who’s shared their story, a family member touched by loss, or simply the quiet realisation of how much safe sleep education has changed outcomes for families — causes like this have a way of finding a place in your life.
Red Nose’s safe sleeping campaigns alone are credited with cutting sudden unexpected infant deaths by roughly 80% since they began. That’s not just a statistic — that’s thousands of families who got to keep their babies.

How I’m Getting Involved This Year
Wearing the nose — proudly, all day, no matter how many odd looks I get at the shops
Making a donation — every donation over $2 is tax deductible, which as someone who spends a lot of time thinking about tax, I appreciate
Sharing the message — because awareness costs nothing and might reach someone who needs it

A Small Ask
If this is the first you’re hearing about Red Nose Day, consider this your invitation. You don’t have to run a marathon or organise a gala dinner. Buy a nose. Wear something ridiculous. Chuck a few dollars towards a cause that’s quietly been saving lives for over three decades.
Sometimes the smallest, silliest gestures carry the most weight.
