As Police officers and Detectives, we are educated about – and in some cases attend – the death of a child affected by SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome), SUDI (sudden unexpected death in infants) or SUDC (Sudden unexpected death in childhood).

These incidents have a profound impact on families, friends and the wider community in various ways. Attending the unexpected death of a child as a police officer and in some cases needing to ask distraught families pointed questions is difficult in any situation; however, we never expect it to happen to one of our own, as it did in mid December 2023.

After seeing and hearing about the fantastic services Red Nose provided to our colleague and his family in the aftermath of their loss, I wanted to give back to Red Nose; an agency that provided unwavering support to anyone who has suffered the loss of a child.

For our Colleagues who have lost a child and in loving memory of Hamish who tragically passed at 16 months.

A little information about Red Nose.

Red Nose Day has been around for over 30 years and the funds raised in that time led to the creation of the Safe Sleep Program, which has reduced the rate of SIDS in Australia by an incredible 80%!

But there is still so much work to do and so many families that rely on their support.
