Ben’s legacy
Since Ben’s death 26 years ago I have been quietly, and in recent years not so quietly, championing a mission to ensure that all parents receive the support they need after the death of their precious baby or child.
This year, however feels different somehow. It feels different not only because every day I witness firsthand the impact good support makes to grieving families or because I know that new parents find comfort and relief through accessing our safer pregnancy and safe sleep resources; or even because we are doing such good work in better providing support to more diverse population groups. This year feels different because I am now a grandmother. A grandmother to the most precious little baby girl. This little girl would have been Ben’s niece and that truly blows my mind.
This precious bundle of joy reminds me that our job is not done. That new families need to be able to easily access our resources and find answers to their questions around safe sleep at 2.00am if needed. It also reminds me that time does not heal all wounds and that the grief of 26 years ago is still alive and well in this newly minted grandmother. It is a gentle reminder that we, at Red Nose, need to be ready to support families in the immediate aftermath of their loss and at all points of their lifelong journey. Grief truly is the great equalizer.
This Red Nose Day I want to commit the funds, we raise together, to ensuring that grieving parents across this beautiful country of ours have access to culturally safe and appropriate support; regardless of their cultural background or where they live. I want to ensure that we develop programs that offer truly individualized support and meet people where they are at. If there is one thing I have learned it is that grief support is not a one size fits all model.
I am pledging to raise $75,000 this Red Nose Day and I’m asking for your support to help me get there. I want to make sure that Red Nose truly is a safe haven for our bereaved families. A place of belonging, connection and togetherness. Grief is an incredibly isolating experience, but it doesn’t need to be.
Together we can make sure that no-one walks the path of grief alone… that is Ben’s legacy.
